Trance Formations I: Gristly Rave – For Amplified Violin, Amplified Cello, Electric Guitar, and Drumset

Commissioned by Ensemble Dal Niente for their 2015 Latin American tour. The three sources of material out of which this piece sprung were the flowing textures in Ravel’s “Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2;” Grisey’s rhythmic vocabulary and patient development of musical material in “Vortex Temporum;” and the timbral and harmonic possibilities embodied by the electric guitar.

Composed for the Pacifica String Quartet; premiered May 2009
The haunting violin solo in Piazzolla’s “Soledad” is recontextualized, placed in a forest of dissonant, Schoenbergian sonorities, timbral effects, and clouds of harmonics.

Composed for the Orquesta Nacional de Sopros dos Templarios; premiered August 2008.
The “remanso” as a concept appears throughout the poetry of Federico García Lorca. The best translation I’ve been able to find into English is the white water rafting term “riverrun,” used to describe the interval of smooth water and energetic repose in between two sets of rapids.
